It's now been one month since I stopped writing on Substack. At the time, I exported all my subscribers so I could later import them into my Kit account. I even sent out an email letting everyone know that I was taking a break and would no longer be writing on Substack.
At that point, I felt stuck on the platform.
I wasn’t sure if Substack was really the place where I wanted to build my business.
Don’t get me wrong—I loved Substack from the very beginning, ever since I first heard about it.
In fact, that’s what inspired me to start my German-language publication back in 2023. (Okay, I ended up deleting it later because German just isn’t the main language on Substack.)
Still, I went on to start a new publication in English, even though it’s not my native language, because I truly believed in the opportunity Substack offered.
But last month, it felt like Substack and I were simply not a match anymore.
I don’t blame the platform, and I’ve learned not to tell myself “it just doesn’t work.”
That’s one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned on my business journey so far: it’s never about the platform. It’s always about how we use it and what we bring to it.
That said, I felt like I needed to step away. During that time, I kept writing on my blog and continued sending a weekly newsletter to my existing subscribers.
(Side note: only a few people unsubscribed, which honestly surprised me in a good way.)
I also realized that I needed to put my focus back on my main business—my German-speaking audience.
That’s why I invested in a new course. I’ve been fully committed to it, and I’m still in the process of learning and implementing all the strategies.
It’s definitely challenging, but it’s also worth the effort and the investment.
That decision gave me new energy, more clarity, and a feeling of lightness—something I’ve often struggled to find in the past. And now, I’m starting to see the first small wins in my business.
But even more important—and totally unexpected—was something else: I gained clarity about my Substack journey.
About what I really want to write, whether I want to keep my Substack at all, and how I want to move forward.
That kind of clarity was something I’d been lacking from the very beginning.
I can’t tell you how many times I rebranded my publication or changed the topics I was writing about.
To be honest, I made all the classic beginner mistakes you can make when starting an online business—whether it's on Substack or anywhere else.
I didn’t have a clear strategy.
I hadn’t defined my audience well enough.
But after diving into the first few lessons of the course, it felt like my brain exploded with insights.
